Petaling Street Photo Walk

On a gray, overcast day, 15 participants were eagerly waiting at the basement of PJEFC Heritage Center. They were all ready to participate in our first ever PhotoWalk trip. Eddy, our friendly bus driver was already there waiting by the roadside.

The benefit of the cloudy sky was that the usually harsh sun that blights tropical Malaysia from mid-morning till late afternoon was turned into a giant softbox. That allowed the colors to pop. All the following shots were minimally processed — straight out of camera with a bit of contrast and level tweak. For many of the shots, I wanted an old-time look to it so they were mostly desaturated and faded. For a couple of shots, I did boost the colors slightly, namely numbers 17 through 21.

Most of my white balance was set to shade with the occasional usage of daylight and cloudy. If you don’t know what I’m writing above and the settings below, time to attend the 101 class here.

FAQs

Q1) What if I rather take photos of food than buildings?

A1) Not a problem – this is a totally free shoot event. You are welcome to take photos of anything that you fancy, be it food, people, buildings, merchants, fellow participants, whatever…

Q2) Can I join if I only have a point-and-shoot camera?

A2) Of course. It doesn’t really matter what camera you have. The only caution I have is if you are using a mobile phone camera. We need to be able to download photos for viewing and sharing after the shoot.

Q3) Can I invite my friends?

A3) Of course. I highly encourage you to invite your friends. It just gets more enjoyable!

Q4) Will I get lost? I don’t know where to walk or shoot? I’ve not been there before.

A4) A map will be given as well as a short briefing. The map will be marked with highlights and the drop-off and pick-up points. One or two suggested walking routes will also be given.

New personal photography project – Coffee!

If you’ve been following my personal blog, you would probably have seen a couple these photos already. Anyway, as an espresso and overall coffee fanatic, I’ve decided to start from this month onwards to try to visit as many coffee shops as possible and try their coffee. Part of this project is actually to take a photo of their coffee from the same angle. This is the top-down, coffee cup on the right composition. I picked up this inspiration from Adbeus who goes around Montreal and their cafes.

It’s always good to have some personal photography projects to keep the creative juices flowing. I’ve one more but that’s going to stay secret for a bit longer.

Fitlicious – The opening

Slowly but surely, Malaysians are becoming a bit more health conscious and it shows. Healthy foods are becoming commonplace and people do read the nutrition values on their packaging nowadays. Health and nutrition clubs are also sprouting up around town. Fitlicious is one such nutrition club – placing emphasis on fellowship and health — it’s a great combo. Activities with friends are most likely to be kept up. We were at the opening ceremony where lions came and there was lots of people, live music and good friends.

10th Anniversary of SEMOA

Mid-June, SEMOA celebrated their 10th anniversary at Metro Tabernacle church in KL with a lot of worship, dance and the launch of the BM worship CD. Gracing the occasion was YB Dato Seri Idris Jala and family. Also in attendance was Henry K Pillai of Grace Community Services, Patrick Lau from Calvary Assembly Singapore and Ong Sek Leang, Senior Pastor of Metro Tabernacle church. They also had famed Indonesian Gospel singer Natasha Nikita.

Always great to cover one of their events because you never know what you’ll see but also it’s always good to witness their outpouring love for the marginalized aboriginal peoples and see how God has been faithful to them. Two umbrellas, a couple of speedlites and my radiopoppers we put into quick service for a impromptu group portrait in five minutes.

Behind the scenes at a recent shoot…

We had a fun time shooting a lovely couple who are amazingly in love with each other and their Savior. We had drinks, cheese tarts and a lot of fun shooting, both indoors and outdoors. I shot this while my beautiful wife was shooting — hey, we’re a team and we both shoot! Photos from that wonderful session coming up soon.
