On a gray, overcast day, 15 participants were eagerly waiting at the basement of PJEFC Heritage Center. They were all ready to participate in our first ever PhotoWalk trip. Eddy, our friendly bus driver was already there waiting by the roadside.
The benefit of the cloudy sky was that the usually harsh sun that blights tropical Malaysia from mid-morning till late afternoon was turned into a giant softbox. That allowed the colors to pop. All the following shots were minimally processed — straight out of camera with a bit of contrast and level tweak. For many of the shots, I wanted an old-time look to it so they were mostly desaturated and faded. For a couple of shots, I did boost the colors slightly, namely numbers 17 through 21.
Most of my white balance was set to shade with the occasional usage of daylight and cloudy. If you don’t know what I’m writing above and the settings below, time to attend the 101 class here.

FAQs
Q1) What if I rather take photos of food than buildings?
A1) Not a problem – this is a totally free shoot event. You are welcome to take photos of anything that you fancy, be it food, people, buildings, merchants, fellow participants, whatever…
Q2) Can I join if I only have a point-and-shoot camera?
A2) Of course. It doesn’t really matter what camera you have. The only caution I have is if you are using a mobile phone camera. We need to be able to download photos for viewing and sharing after the shoot.
Q3) Can I invite my friends?
A3) Of course. I highly encourage you to invite your friends. It just gets more enjoyable!
Q4) Will I get lost? I don’t know where to walk or shoot? I’ve not been there before.
A4) A map will be given as well as a short briefing. The map will be marked with highlights and the drop-off and pick-up points. One or two suggested walking routes will also be given.

After a lovely two week trip, its always good to be home.
Lots of things to do but more importantly, time to finish up a few Albums and images. Also have a video to work on for this weekend.
After a night spent in beautiful Hangzhou and the famous “West Lake”, we’d like to find out if anyone would be interested in a destination wedding photography plus holiday package? I’ve some idea on the flow and schedule but since AirAsia flies there, the flights would be relatively cheap. An express train has a regular schedule to Shanghai is also available, making it extremely convenient. My basic package looks like below:
Day 1 : Arrive and check into 4-star Lakeside hotel (if you want to go upmarket, it’ll be the lovely Shangri-La)
Welcome dinner at the with famed Hangzhou dished – Tong Por Yoke and Beggar’s Chicken.
Day 2 : West Lake Cruise and shoot (2.5 hours)
Afternoon at your leisure
Evening shoot at Leifeng Pagoda, surrounds (2.5 hours)
Night show “Impressions of the West Lake by director Zhang Yimou”
(Breakfast at hotel, Lunch and Dinner provided by tour)
Day 3 : Free and easy. (Reshoot if weather is bad during Day 2)
Day tour of Hangzhou (tours to tea factories, silk factories, surrounds)
Day 4 : Afternoon flight back to Malaysia
I’m targeting a package price around RM3,999 per couple for the shoot for all inclusive fares, shoot, 20-page 10″ x 10″ Premium Book Bound Photobook, tours and accommodation (4-star, not the Shang obviously). Anyone interested?

Specifically, Shanghai. The packing challenge is compounded by the fact that a hard case is better protection for your stuff that’s going to be checked in. Not to mention a bit more secure in terms of airport pilferage. The problem is once in China, I’ve a couple of trains to take. From maglevs to intercity fast trains. Packing a backpack in there solves the problem but not the capacity and weight issues. My empty hard case weights 4kg empty. My 65-liter backpack weights 2.5 kg empty.
I also have to pack in my Manfrotto tripod. Clothes for a week at least (I always do laundry on a trip) and enough rain gear considering that certain places are nicer with rain. You also don’t want to stop shooting when the weather turns bad — you’ll miss out the better photos of the trip! Target loaded weight – 18kg. Usually airlines won’t give a hoot if you exceed the weight by a kilo or two but I do have fond memories of three people with 105kg of checked baggage at Beijing Capital International Airport! On our return trip, we have five this time which should give us about a hundred kilos. More than enough unless someone was overzealous in their shopping!
Other problem is that my day pack will primarily consist of camera equipment but I’ll also have my Dell Mini 9, Sandisk card readers, two portable SATA drives, battery chargers, batteries, assorted cables, you know the drill. For longer excursions out of my Shanghai base, 65-liters is good. For overnight sojourns, it is unwieldy. Looks like I’ll have to bring along a little stuff sack so that I can cram a nights’ worth of clothes, etc into the stuff sack along with my day pack loaded with cameras.

We’re confirmed on our flights to Shanghai, China in April 2010. This means that if you are looking for some really interesting Engagement or Portrait photography, this is your chance! You won’t need to pay for our travel or accommodation, just the package you want. If you’re planning to book us during this trip, drop me a message or phone call — we’ll have some attractive packages for you.
China is too far away? How about Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia? That’s right, we’ll also be heading to Kuching in July so let us know if you’d like an engagement shoot in Cat – city or the surrounding rain forest. That’ll guarantee to make a memorable shoot!
